Week of September 25, 2023

 Please Note

- I hope you had a great weekend! I can't believe we are in the last week of September already. We will continue working on our routines, but the kids are really settling in and doing a great job! We have a pretty calm week but there are a lot of reminders.

- We started our first unit in reading today on "How Plants and Animals Change". We will start making our flashcards for sight words this week. They will go home in your child's 'pet bag' and will come home each night. Please make sure they return to school. The sight words and spelling words for the week can also be found in your child's "R Copybook" and at the bottom of the blog.  (They will need to know how to spell the spelling words, but only to read the sight words.)

- Please review all spelling words and sight words each night to prepare for the test on Friday. There will also be a short reading quiz that we will prepare for in school.

- Please check your child's homework for neat handwriting (especially letter and number reversals) and completeness. We've been working on writing neatly and in lowercase letters in school, and it would be helpful if you could continue to reinforce this at home.  Please have them use pencil only, unless the directions call for coloring.  Thank you for your help with this.

- A paper explaining the Saints Celebration will be sent home tomorrow. Please read it carefully and mark down the dates. The report will be due on Wednesday, October 11th and the celebration will be on Friday, October 27th. If you have any questions please let me know.

- We have our first field trip planned to Saunders Woods on Thursday, October 26th! You can fill out the permission form for your child HERE. The payment info will be available tomorrow. We need 4 chaperones for our class. If you have your clearances and are interested, please email me back and I will pick from a hat next week.

-Have a great week!

Week of September 18, 2023

We had a great time with our first 8th-grade buddy activity!
Please Note

- We will have our first school Mass on Wednesday at 9:00am. All are welcome to join us!

- We will have our first Religion test on Thursday. We will take it together as practice.  I will still send a study guide home today if you want to start practicing with your child.

- We will be trying to login to all of our new apps this week at school.  Be on the lookout for login information going home later this week so you can practice at home.  They will be listed in the front of their Homework copybook.

Week of September 11, 2023

Welcome to our Classroom Blog! We are so excited to start our first full week of first grade, and are looking forward to a great year. Thanks to all of you who came to Back to School Night. You can find the BTSN information here.  It was great to meet everyone. We have a lot of fun things planned so keep checking our classroom blog for updates and pictures of what is going on in Room 3.

Please Note

- The first few weeks of school are very important for setting expectations and learning our classroom routines and procedures. Students thrive in environments where they feel comfortable and know what is expected of them. I encourage you to also have expectations and routines at home as well. For example, each day after school your child can eat a snack, empty their home folder, complete their homework and practice their sight words and spelling words for the week. Simple chores like packing their school bags, helping pack lunches/snack, and making their beds will help your child to become responsible, organized, and independent.

- Please be sure to check your child's "Home Folder" with them every night. They can empty out any papers that were completed in school.  If anything needs to be sent to school, please place it in the folder.

- We will start off slow with homework the first few weeks so the kids can get back into the swing of it!

- On Friday, we will be having our One Book, One School Book Club. Students are asked to wear their t-shirt that will be sent home today with their gym shorts. We will be talking about "Boxitects" and completing a fun activity with our 8th grade Buddies.

- There will be a dress-down day on Monday, 9/18. Please send in $1.00 to dress down.  ***Our class will also have gym that day due to a conflict in Mrs. Marchese's schedule, so please have the children wear sneakers with their dress-down clothes.  (They can still wear their gym uniforms on Friday.)

- The Mystery Reader sign-up genius is up! You can find it here. If you have any questions please let me know!

- Please email me with any questions or concerns :)

Thanks!
Melissa Thornton
